Confederation of Indian Organizations (UK)

Stroke Prevention & Education Project Leicester & Leicestershire

The CIO was established in 1975 as a national body working to ensure the development and recognition of the role of the South Asian voluntary and community sector. The CIO's aim is to ensure that needs of the South Asian commnunities are incorporated within national and local policy and that these needs are effectively met through services provided by mainstream organisations, statutory bodies and voluntary and community groups.

The CIO has maintained credibility in a number of diverse sectors and is well placed to make an impact at a national level on key decision makers. At the same time, it has maintained community links through its member and user organisations as well ask through effective community consultations and community-based research.

Stroke

People from South Asia are at higher risk of suffering a Stroke than the Caucasian population and it is more likely to be fatal. There is also a lower uptake of Social Care Services by South Asian communities in relation to a Stroke compared to the wider community. This may be due to a range of reasons including language barriers, inappropriate services, cultural issues and lack of more targeted promotion.

The Stroke Prevention & Education project aim is to set up outreach, advocacy and support services in Leicester & Leicestershire for people from South Asian communities who have suffered from a Stroke or are at high risk. The project is a partnership between the Confederation of Indian Organisations (UK) and the Stroke Association.

Project Objectives

* To prevent and reduce the incidence of Stroke within the South Asian Communities

* To improve access to Health and Social Care services following a Stroke

* To raise awareness of Stroke within the South Asian communities.

* To restore confidence and skills of Stroke survivors

* To remove language barriers to enable more effectively Stroke communication

* To network with key South Asian voluntary sector groups to promote Stroke awareness

* To organise seminars and deliver training sessions for South Asian voluntary sector groups.
