The CIO was established in 1975 as a national body working to ensure the developmentt & recognition of the role of the South Asian voluntary and community sector. The CIO's aim is to ensure that needs of the South Asian communities are incorporated within national and local policy and that these needs are effectively met through services provided by mainstream organisations, statutory bodies and voluntary and community groups.

The CIO has maintained credibility in a number of diverse sectors and is well placed to make an impact at a national level on key decision makers. At the same time, it has maintained community links through its member and user organisations as well ask through effective community consultations and community-based research.
