•There are factors known to increase the risk of a stroke.

•Some of these factors are things that can not be changed. 

•Other risks may be reduced by life style changes or medication.   

THINGS YOU CAN'T CHANGE

•Sex: in people aged under 75 – more men have stroke than women.

•Age: more common in people over 65. Arteries harden by a build up of cholesterol

•Family History: Increases the risk.

•Ethnic background: people from Asian, African, African – Caribbean communities are at a greater risk.

•Diabetes

 If they are not treated, over time these medical conditions may damage the arteries.

•Have your blood pressure checked regularly

•Get active

•Avoid heavy drinking

•Reduce salt & fatty foods •Eat plenty of fruits & vegetables
